Richard brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in diverse areas of law to managing and solving legal problems for clients. 

He is the lawyer that other lawyers consult with when faced with their most difficult legal challenges. He brings a keen analytical approach to the resolution of the complex factual and legal problems, in both the private law and public law spheres. Regardless of the nature of the issue, Richard has an appreciation for the fundamental need for practical and workable client-centered outcomes whether that solution is arrived at through litigation or negotiation.

Representative Work

  • Richard has a diverse litigation practice.  He has extensive experience in complex and large scale commercial and civil litigation, including class actions. 
  • Richard was counsel for one of the accused in R. v. Nugent in Ontario Court of Appeal. The case is the leading authority in Ontario on the application of s. 11 (b) of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in prosecutions under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.  
  • He is a senior practitioner in the electricity regulation field, and appears regularly before the Ontario Energy Board and Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. 
  • He appeared as counsel in the Supreme Court of Canada in OEB v. OPG and Bell Canada v. Bell Aliant, two of the leading authorities on Canadian rate regulation.
  • He was a Commissioner on the 7th and 8th Justices of the Peace Remuneration Commissions.
  • He has a significant executive employment law practice, specializing in restrictive covenants and change of control agreements.

Richard has spoken on numerous occasions to groups regarding developments in the electricity sector in Ontario. He has frequently served as an instructor in a variety of advocacy skills programs, including the Osgoode Intensive Trial Advocacy Program. He is a regular contributor to continuing legal education programs by the Law Society, Advocates' Society and the Ontario Bar Association (OBA).
